Politics & Governance 🏛️
In a significant development for Nepali workers seeking overseas opportunities, South Korea is set to establish a dedicated visa center in Nepal. This initiative, announced by Ambassador Park Tae-Young during a meeting with Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal (MyRepublica), is aimed at streamlining the process for Nepali individuals seeking employment in South Korea’s manufacturing and agriculture sectors. These sectors remain highly attractive due to their comparatively higher wages and favorable working conditions. Beyond job placements, there are also plans to provide concessional loans, supported by KOICA, specifically for Nepalis returning from Korea who previously worked under the Employment Permit System (EPS). This thoughtful program is designed to encourage them to establish their own businesses back home, leveraging their foreign experience for Nepal’s domestic development and fostering new entrepreneurship (Rising Nepal).
The Nepali government is steadfastly pushing forward with its top priority: the comprehensive electrification of both the transport and cooking sectors. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising recently highlighted the significant progress made in increasing electric vehicle adoption, but also stressed the critical need for more concerted efforts to transition households from traditional cooking gas to cleaner alternatives, such as induction stoves and other forms of green energy (Rising Nepal). This ambitious strategy is not just about environmental conservation; it is integral to achieving 100 percent electricity access for all citizens within the next five years, improving energy efficiency, and playing our part in mitigating global warming. Such visionary shifts are crucial for building a more sustainable and modern Nepal for future generations.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s political landscape continues to be shaped by various developments and ongoing challenges. Prime Minister Sushila Karki has firmly directed government bodies to maintain austerity in public spending, emphasizing efficient fund utilization and calling for enhanced dialogue with the private sector (MyRepublica). Despite a Supreme Court interim order, the government has controversially re-issued letters to recall ambassadors from 11 countries, creating a noticeable legal and diplomatic standoff (Onlinekhabar). The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) market has experienced notable fluctuations, seeing both surges and plunges, reflecting ongoing volatility. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated efforts to systematically manage tangled wires and cables, addressing a long-standing urban issue. In judicial news, the Supreme Court is preparing for its full operational resumption from November 17, following damages incurred during the Gen Z protests. Concerns remain, however, as sugarcane farmers are still awaiting promised subsidies for the previous harvest, while Sudurpaschim University continues to grapple with the encroachment of 300 bighas of its land. On a more collaborative note, a new India-Nepal Startup Partnership Network has been launched to foster bilateral entrepreneurship.
Economy & Development 💸
Good news for Nepal’s energy sector! The construction of two additional 400 KV cross-border transmission lines – Inaruwa-Poornia and Dododhara-Bareilly – is moving forward with a joint venture between the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited THT. With the NEA holding a 51% stake in the Nepali section, this collaboration isn’t just about power transmission; it’s about ensuring Nepal has a secure market for its generated electricity and strengthening regional energy ties. This project promises to boost our energy independence and contribute to a more stable power supply for all of us.
On the industrial front, the long-standing dispute over overdue electricity dues for dedicated and trunk lines appears to be resolving. Representatives from the private sector have agreed to pay the first installment as a deposit, paving the way for the NEA to restore power to affected industries MyRepublica. This is a win-win situation, showing a commitment from both sides to find a sustainable solution and get businesses back up and running, which benefits our entire economy. It’s great to see collaborative spirit leading to positive changes!

The spirit of social service and cultural heritage is vibrantly alive in Nepal, particularly highlighted by the efforts to preserve and promote traditional Newari culture in Pokhara. In a powerful testament to the impact of collective action and digital solidarity, the **Gen Z movement** in Nepal has drastically reshaped the political landscape and sparked critical discussions on leadership and governance. What began as protests against corruption and state-sponsored inefficiencies evolved into a digital uprising that played a role in the formation of an interim government (see MyRepublica). This movement showcased a new form of “networked democracy,” where the energy of dissent was coordinated through online platforms, proving that strong leadership can emerge from collective purpose rather than a single figure (Onlinekhabar).
