Migrant workers face increased medical test fees.

This week, Nepal stands at a pivotal juncture, navigating a complex tapestry of national and global forces. Intense political dynamics are demanding a “political reset” as the nation prepares for crucial elections, while a powerful youth movement calls for deep-seated systemic transformation. Simultaneously, the welfare of Nepali migrant workers abroad takes center stage amid new fee structures and legal battles, underscoring critical human rights concerns. Amidst these internal discussions, Nepal is actively engaging on the international stage to promote its adventure tourism and strengthen economic ties, striving to balance progress with the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.

Diaspora & Globalisation 🌍

A significant concern this week revolves around the government’s decision to increase medical test fees for aspiring migrant workers. The Nepal Forum of Democratic Foreign Employment Entrepreneurs has voiced strong opposition, stating that this hike – which more than doubles fees for some destinations – disproportionately impacts individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (Rising Nepal). With service fees for Gulf countries and Malaysia often capped at Rs 10,000, a Rs 9,500 medical test fee is seen as extremely worrying and discriminatory (NepalNews).

In a landmark decision, the Tokyo High Court has ordered compensation exceeding JPY39 million ($250,000) for the family of a Nepali migrant worker who died in police custody in Japan (Nepali Times). This brings attention to migrant rights and international justice, as the court emphasized that police failed in their duty to ensure that Arjun Bahadur Singh was not restrained too tightly, leading to his death (Nepali Times).

Despite these challenges, Nepal was honored as the Best Destination of the Year for adventure tourism at the India International Travel Mart (ITM) Award Night 2025 in Pune, India (Rising Nepal). Discussions explored strengthening Nepal-India technology, aiming for better cross-border connectivity and a robust ICT sector (MyRepublica). Separately, Nepal continues to brand Sagarmatha Sambad at the COP30 climate summit, pushing for the inclusion of mountain agendas in global climate discussions (Nepali Times).

Politics & Governance 🏛️

Nepal is grappling with an urgent need for a “political reset,” as described by Senior Advocate Sharma, who highlights deep cracks in the democratic system and youth-led uprisings demanding systemic transformation and accountability (The Himalayan Times). This dominant theme reveals a growing confrontation with a political culture of patronage and elite dominance, challenging leaders to embrace reform or risk further instability (The Himalayan Times).

Preparations are intensifying for the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026, with Prime Minister Sushila Karki directing the Nepali Army to prioritize security and urging controls on excessive poll spending (Rising Nepal). Simultaneously, new political parties are strategizing to meet the 3% threshold for proportional representation by uniting under common symbols, signaling a dynamic electoral landscape ahead (MyRepublica).

PM Karki has taken steps against nepotism by reducing her secretariat to six members, removing 14 appointees [1]. Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara was released on Rs 2 million bail in a gold smuggling case (The Annapurna Express). Home Minister Aryal pledged to strengthen federal-province security relations and expedite the Police Adjustment Act (Rising Nepal). Protests by the Miraj Dhungana group at Singha Durbar demanded constitutional amendments and accountability for past incidents (Onlinekhabar). Interestingly, former AIG Bishwa Raj Pokharel, once backed by UML for IGP, has joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (MyRepublica).

Economy & Development 💸

Nepal’s economy is standing at a “crossroads,” facing significant stagnation in real estate and industries operating below capacity, exacerbated by political uncertainty that deters investment (Nepali Times). Despite paradoxically high remittance inflows and ample bank liquidity, the lack of productive investment highlights a need for structural shifts in economic policy and a more stable environment for capital, rather than relying solely on safe assets [1].

Adding to the economic challenges, tea exports via the eastern checkpoint have plummeted by 37%, resulting in a loss of over Rs 831 million for Nepal in the first four months of the fiscal year (The Himalayan Times). Furthermore, a sharp 46% increase in rice and paddy imports signals a serious vulnerability in the agricultural sector, stemming from climate fluctuations and inadequate infrastructure, demanding an urgent national farm revival strategy (MyRepublica).

On a brighter note, Nepal is set to export an additional 20 MW of electricity to Bangladesh, strengthening energy cooperation (The Himalayan Times). Underground electrification in Bharatpur is 80% complete (Khabarhub), and the NLHDF welcomed the ninth amendment to the Land-Related Ordinance to revive the economy (NepalNews). Birgunj has seen substantial export growth, reaching Rs 33.21 billion (Khabarhub). However, the Karnali Provincial International Stadium remains delayed due to political feuds, leading to unproductive investment [1]. Commercial orange farming is also replacing traditional crops in Myagdi, boosting household incomes (Khabarhub).

Social & Cultural ⭐

Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan is championing efforts to preserve Nepa Bhasa (Newari language) and culture by leveraging information technology, urging stakeholders to prioritize traditional language and heritage in the digital age (NepalNews). This initiative aims to maintain a vital aspect of Nepalis’ national identity and cultural richness, exemplified by the introduction of local curricula for Newari language and culture preservation (Rising Nepal).

In a broader push for inclusivity, discussions are ongoing about the opportunities and challenges in developing wheelchair-accessible tours and trekking in Nepal (Onlinekhabar). While the country offers immense adventure tourism potential, there’s a recognized need for significant improvements in infrastructure, facilities, and policies to ensure inclusive travel for differently-abled visitors, emphasizing that tourism should be accessible to all (Onlinekhabar).

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is launching a digital literacy program to ensure safe digital transactions for its residents [1]. Nepali ultra-marathoner Sunmaya Budha claimed the World Trail Majors title, winning her fifth gold medal of 2025 and bringing immense pride to Nepal (Nepali Times). Unfortunately, a trauma center in Baitadi remains inoperative due to a lack of manpower and equipment (Khabarhub). A nationwide agricultural survey has been launched to collect data for evidence-based policies (NepalNews), and devotees continue to flock to the Chilime hot spring in Rasuwa, believing in its therapeutic benefits (Khabarhub). The Kaji film is also set to be released on April 10, marking director Laxman Rijal’s comeback (Onlinekhabar).
